Mozzarella Stick Grilled Cheese (Print View)

Golden bread layered with melted mozzarella sticks and tangy marinara for a satisfying bite.

# Ingredient List:

→ Dairy & Cheese

01 - 8 frozen mozzarella sticks
02 - 4 slices mozzarella cheese

→ Bread

03 - 4 slices Italian or sourdough bread

→ Sauces

04 - 1/2 cup marinara sauce plus extra for dipping

→ Butter & Oil

05 - 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened

# Directions:

01 - Bake the mozzarella sticks according to package instructions until golden and crispy. Set aside and keep warm.
02 - Spread a thin layer of softened butter on one side of each bread slice.
03 - Place two bread slices, buttered side down, on a clean surface. Layer each with 2 slices of mozzarella cheese, 4 cooked mozzarella sticks, and 2 tablespoons of marinara sauce.
04 - Top each with the remaining bread slices, buttered side up.
05 - Heat a large skillet or griddle over medium heat. Place the sandwiches in the pan and cook for 3–4 minutes per side, pressing gently, until the bread is golden brown and the cheese is melted.
06 - Remove from heat, slice in half, and serve hot with extra marinara sauce for dipping.

# Expert Tips:

01 -
  • The mozzarella sticks stay perfectly melty and crispy inside while the bread gets that golden, buttery crust you crave.
  • Marinara sauce adds a tangy brightness that makes this feel special without requiring any real cooking skills.
  • It comes together in under 20 minutes, making it ideal when you want something indulgent but don't have time to fuss.
02 -
  • Warm your mozzarella sticks just before assembling, not hours ahead—cold sticks won't melt smoothly and can create a weird texture.
  • Press gently while cooking, not hard; too much pressure squeezes all the cheese out the sides and leaves you with an uneven sandwich.
  • The marinara inside is just as important as the butter—it keeps everything from tasting one-note and adds moisture that prevents dryness.
03 -
  • Cook your mozzarella sticks in an air fryer instead of the oven if you have one—they get crispier in less time and it's become my favorite shortcut.
  • Make these right before you want to eat them; they don't reheat as well as you'd hope because the cheese texture changes inside.
