Hojicha Americano Japanese Green Tea (Print View)

Roasted Japanese green tea with coffee-like strength and gentle warmth.

# Ingredient List:

→ Tea

01 - 2 teaspoons hojicha loose leaf tea or 1 hojicha tea bag

→ Water

02 - 1 cup filtered water, just off the boil

# Directions:

01 - Heat filtered water to approximately 194°F, just below boiling point.
02 - Add hojicha tea leaves or tea bag to a teapot, French press, or mug.
03 - Pour hot water over hojicha and let steep for 3 to 4 minutes, adjusting time based on desired strength.
04 - Strain and discard leaves if using loose leaf tea. Serve hot as you would an Americano coffee.

# Expert Tips:

01 -
  • It tastes like sophistication but requires barely any effort, which feels like a small cheat code for self-care.
  • The roasted depth rivals coffee in mood-shifting power while leaving you calm instead of jittery, perfect for afternoons when you need clarity without the crash.
02 -
  • Water that's too hot will taste bitter and harsh, stripping away the lovely caramel and chocolate notes that make hojicha special in the first place.
  • Hojicha is naturally low in caffeine compared to regular green or black tea, which is the whole point, so don't over-steep trying to make it stronger or you'll just get bitterness instead of depth.
03 -
  • Buy hojicha from a good source that specializes in Japanese tea, because the roasting quality makes an enormous difference in whether it tastes rich or just flat and generic.
  • If you only have a tea bag, don't dismiss it, but do squeeze it gently at the end rather than aggressively, which releases bitter compounds instead of the good stuff.
